Full description

Microsoft Excel is one of the most widely used applications for organising, analysing, and presenting data. Whether you’re completely new to spreadsheets or looking to strengthen your existing skills, this course provides a practical introduction to the features you’ll use most often. By the end of the lessons, you’ll feel more confident creating spreadsheets, performing calculations, organising information, and working more efficiently with keyboard shortcuts.

The course begins with the fundamentals of Excel, helping learners become familiar with the interface and the essential building blocks of a workbook. You’ll explore how workbooks, worksheets, rows, columns, and cells work together, while also learning how to navigate the Ribbon and its tools. Early lessons demonstrate how to enter and edit data, apply basic formatting, and save your work correctly so your spreadsheets remain organised and easy to access.

Once you’ve mastered the basics, the course introduces several of Excel’s most valuable formulas and functions. You’ll learn how to use SUM and AVERAGE to perform quick calculations and discover how the IF function can be used to return different results based on conditions. The lessons also explain the importance of absolute cell references when copying formulas across multiple cells. To help you retrieve information from large tables, you’ll compare the traditional VLOOKUP function with the more modern XLOOKUP, learning when each method is most appropriate and how they simplify finding data within a spreadsheet.

The next section focuses on improving the appearance and usability of your worksheets. You’ll learn how number formatting can make figures easier to read and understand, while conditional formatting allows important values to stand out automatically. Practical demonstrations show how to sort and filter information, making it simple to analyse large lists of data. You’ll also discover how Excel Tables provide better organisation and automatic formatting, how Freeze Panes keeps headings visible while scrolling through large worksheets, and how to create basic charts that present information visually.

To help you work faster and more efficiently, the course includes a comprehensive guide to 50 essential keyboard shortcuts. Rather than presenting them as one long list, the shortcuts are organised into five easy-to-follow categories: Navigation, Editing, Formatting, Formulas and Calculation, and File and View. Each section contains ten carefully selected shortcuts that can save time during everyday tasks and reduce reliance on the mouse. Learning these shortcuts can significantly improve productivity for both beginners and experienced users.

At the end of the course, you’ll complete a short assessment consisting of eight multiple-choice questions designed to test your understanding of the material. A score of at least six correct answers is required to pass, ensuring you’ve gained a solid grasp of the core concepts covered throughout the lessons.

After successfully completing the quiz, you’ll be invited to enter your name to generate a personalised certificate of completion. The certificate can be printed or saved as a record of your achievement, making it a useful addition to your professional development portfolio or CV. Overall, this course provides a practical foundation in Microsoft Excel and equips learners with the knowledge and confidence to use spreadsheets effectively in both personal and workplace settings.
